Every Day Counts - We need you here!

Every Day Counts is a district-wide attendance initiative designed to strengthen student engagement, reduce chronic absenteeism, and ensure every student can succeed. Centered on the belief that showing up matters, this campaign brings families, students, schools, and staff together to promote daily attendance and help students finish the school year strong.

Students are considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the school year (about 18 days) for any reason. Even when absences are excused, missing this amount of school time can make it harder for students to keep up with learning, build relationships, and stay connected to their school community. Regular attendance helps students feel confident, supported, and ready to succeed.

Families play an important role in helping students succeed. Supporting daily routines, encouraging students to share their voices, and celebrating progress all make a difference.

Together, we continue to carry forward a simple and powerful message: Every day counts–show up, connect, succeed.

Student Attendance Procedures

Chronic Absenteeism and Truancy

According to the Virginia Department of Education, attendance has been increasingly the focus of attention among school divisions and educators. Regular attendance is a significant factor in a student’s success:

  • Chronic absenteeism correlates to low academic achievement;
  • Absenteeism is a powerful predictor of dropout rates;
  • Absenteeism has been linked to poor outcomes later in life.

Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing ten percent or more of the academic year for any reason, including excused absences, unexcused absences, and suspensions. Based on a 180-day school year, that means approximately 18 days per year or 2 to 3 days per month.

Truancy is the act of accruing one or more unexcused absences, where the parent is unaware of or does not support the student’s absence, or where the parent’s provided reason for the absence is not acceptable to the school administration.

Missed instruction, regardless of the reason, can have significant academic consequences. Therefore, the broader emphasis is on improving attendance for every student.

Every Day Counts Because...

Chelsea: It helps us to get an education for our future. It prepares us for the real world (work, college) and it hold us accountable.

Aspen: You have to learn to be smart!

Blayre: It shapes our future. Missing school means you are missing opportunities to expand your mind and gain knowledge.

Juliette: At school we learn and discover new things. We make friends. If we miss school then we will miss out on lessons that we will later be tested on. We need to go to school so that we can learn and grow for our future.

Oliver: At school, I learn skills I need to become a successful, happy adult. I should also go there to get good grades on my report cards. Another reason to go ther is that's where my friends are.

Genesis: That way they don't fall behind on what they're learning at the moment. It helps them to be responsible when they grow up.

Ava: Every day you learn something new…

Jace: If you miss a day of school you can miss all of the work and you might fail a test. You are training to be a successful and responsible adult.

Angelly: God gives us life so we can keep moving forward. Each day is an opportunity to continue toward tomorrow and an opportunity to learn better things for the future. It makes me very happy to stay attentive to my daughter so that she arrives to her classes on time.

Nevaeh: We get to learn, We get to grow, We get to be kind to one another, and we get to play with our friends. We also take attendance serious. We get to do math, science, and reading. And most of all I love coming to school.

Elementary students participated in a school-based Design Challenge designed to boost engagement and attendance on half days as part of the Every Day Counts – We Need You Here campaign.

Using the book "We are Definitely Human," students took part in a sci-fi–inspired engineering challenge that encourages creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. Through hands-on design and imaginative thinking, students explored what it means to be human while applying engineering and design-thinking skills in a fun, interactive way.
